The Announcement

“Aha. You made it,” said Paul, chuckling.

“No thanks to you,” said Jace. “Hold on, will you? Did you just put my life in danger?”

“Yes, maybe. Can you also give me a moment, please? Let me check your stats. Aha.”

“Aha, what?”

“So, the good news is you are a player. That’s a relief. The bad news is, unfortunately, that you are not a warrior. Your attack strength is one, and somehow, your ability strength is three. Congratulations. With a test score of four, you have passed the minimum requirement for joining the team. You are not a warrior, though. But you’ll do fine; we can keep you as a supporting crew member. In other words, you can help fix things.”

“I still can’t believe you just put my life in danger. What if I didn’t make it out alive? Are you crazy?”

“Well, I am not crazy. I bet on you. Didn’t I? It took two thousand dungeon dollars to test. Think of it as a loan. I invested in you. You can thank me later.”

“I didn’t ask you to invest in me. Why would I even want to be part of this thing?”

“Well, I wish I had time to explain, but trust me, you’ll learn everything as we go along. Now, there is one thing though…”

“What’s that?”

“How did you escape with such meager attack strength?”

“You said I had a ‘one’. Doesn’t that amount to something?”

“Huh. I hate to break it to you but most kids–actual kids–i.e. teenagers start at that level. You are an old man.”

“You know I don’t want anything to do with this. I am done.”

“Where do you think you are leaving?”

“I am getting out of here.”

“Well, that’s up to yourself. I thought you owned this place. If you want to go out or something, it’s up to you. Huh. But the important thing is I was here to recruit you, and I just did.”

“No, you did not.”

“Yes, I did.”

“I never agreed to your terms. So, no, you did not.”

“Well, you agreed to be tested, and the test cost me money, and if you were thankful, you would have to work for me. But hey, it’s not that bad. You’ll probably make a couple of hundred dollars in every dungeon that you are with me. So, you can easily repay my debt.”

“What does that even mean? I am not repaying anything.”

“That would not be good because the police might have to arrest you.”

“How would they know that?”

“I’ll report you, of course.”

“That is not a very convincing argument.”

“Okay, fine. Have it your way. I was just kidding about the police. How about you join me in this dungeon and then we are even. Come on, buddy. Help me out here. My team needs just one more member.”

Jace wondered what to do. On the one hand, he could get out of this agreement if he joined the dungeon. On the other, he wasn’t sure what would happen if he did. What if he never made it out alive?

“I think you need to accept this quest,” said Daelan.
